Research Fellow
Hudson Institute of Medical Research and Monash University
Clayton, Victoria, Australia
Dr Harriet Fitzgerald is an early career reproductive biologist, holding a joint appointment as a Research Fellow at Hudson Institute and Monash University. Harriet completed her Honours and PhD with Prof Lois Salamonsen and Dr Tracey Edgell at Hudson Institute and Monash University. She undertook a 4 postdoctoral research position in the US in Prof Tom Spencer’s lab at the University of Missouri. While in the US, she was awarded a Lalor Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship, established the hormone responsiveness of human endometrial epithelial organoids as models of endometrial glands, and was the first to perform single cell RNA sequencing on endometrial epithelial organoids, published in PNAS.
In 2022, she was recruited to Hudson Institute and Monash University, joining the laboratories of Professor Caroline Gargett and Professor Beverley Vollenhoven. Her research interests cover the full spectrum of endometrial biology from endometrial stem cells and regeneration to the influence of hormones on endometrial remodelling and the interaction between endometrial glands and stromal cells. Harriet is utilising these findings to define the impact of altered endometrial function on menstrual health and infertility and the intersection between endometrial health and two major intractable gynaecological diseases: endometriosis and adenomyosis.
Harriet has been awarded grant funding as Chief Investigator A (CIA) including by La Marato de TV3 Foundation Grant (€400K), internationally competitive Lalor Postdoc Fellowship (USD$52K), Phenomics Australia Pipeline Accelerator Grant (AUD$25K), University of Missouri Research Grant (USD$1K), CASS Foundation (AUD$65K) and Monash University Seed Grant (AUD$20K). Her unique expertise has been sought by collaborators, securing funding as CIB (Perpetual Impact Philanthropy, AUD$100K), CID (MRFF AUD$800K) and Associate Investigator (NHMRC, AUD$1.5M). Harriet is main supervisor for 1 PhD student, co-supervisors 3 PhD students was competitively selected as a Hudson Emerging Leader and for the Monash University Marlow Hampshire Health & Biomedical Research Leader Development Program.
