My name is Scout Bowman-Gibson and I am an MD/PhD candidate at Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine. My thesis research in Dr. Thomas Brown's lab involves defining how circulating maternal extracellular vesicles (EVs) may contribute to the pathogenesis of severe early-onset preeclampsia (sEOPE). We have recently published on the significant elevation of maternal EV concentrations in sEOPE, and found that circulating maternal EVs carry hypoxic signaling messengers such as hypoxia inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF1a). Our long-term goals include assessing how maternal EVs may be implemented for predicting, diagnosing, and monitoring patients with gestational disorders like sEOPE.
