Assistant Professor (Research)
Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island/Brown University
Providence, Rhode Island, United States
Kathryn ("Kate") Grive, Ph.D is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She performed her undergraduate work at University of Connecticut and obtained her doctorate in Molecular Biology at Brown University as a Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Predoctoral Fellow in lab of Rich Freiman, where she studied transcriptional regulatory networks in developing oocytes. Kate then trained as the Hartwell Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University under the mentorship of Paula Cohen, studying dynamic gene expression programs in first wave versus steady state spermatogenesis.
In the fall of 2019, Kate joined the faculty at Brown University as an Assistant Professor in OB-GYN and began studying the molecular mechanisms mechanisms of ovarian reserve establishment and maintenance including identifying novel regulators of the ovarian reserve, developing strategies for ovarian reserve protection during chemotherapy, and evaluating effect of ovarian reserve regulation of female lifespan and healthspan. Currently, her lab is characterizing a proteostasis regulator in mammalian oocytes, as well as investigating its utility as a novel serum biomarker of the ovarian reserve.
Kate’s laboratory is funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Development at the NIH, the Buck Institute’s Global Consortium for Reproductive Longevity and Equality, and other private foundations. She is active in scientific writing and review, and is a reviewer for more than 20 journals, as well as a current Associate Editor for Reproduction and Fertility, and ad hoc member of several NIH study sections. Kate is also a passionate participant in her professional society, the Society for the Study Reproduction, having served full terms on multiple committees, including the Women in Reproductive Sciences Steering Committee. Last year, Kate was a co-organizer for SSR’s biennial Ovarian Workshop, held in Dublin, Ireland and she was recently named an SSR 2025 “Rising Star”, recognizing research innovation, publication record, and contributions to the scientific community.
