Shams Mowafak Saad is a Ph.D. candidate in Cell and Molecular Biology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University, where she conducts her research in the Evans Lab. She earned her BS in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Science and Technology in Zewail City in 2021. Shams is broadly interested in the specialized roles of the actin cytoskeleton in different cellular synapses, including the neuronal synapse, immune synapse, and—of particular interest to her—the fertilization synapse. Her current doctoral research focuses on investigating the role of the actin-binding protein nexilin in mammalian oocyte meiotic maturation.
